It is a tug of war! Or, is it a tug of eat? Western gulls (Larus occidentalis) eating from a mass of dozens of Gooseneck barnacles (Lepas anatifera, Crustacea; shell portion about 1.5 inches long, and the worm-like neck stretching up to at least 8 inches) (also called goose barnacles) attached to driftwood flotsam lying on a Pacific Ocean beach in Oregon, USA. Because of their desire to attach to flotsam, Gooseneck barnacles can be found on ocean beaches and out in the oceans throughout much of the world. -- PHOTO: 41,753.05716

Todd -- I'm glad you liked the photo. It was fascinating to watch the gulls eating the barnacles, and to inspect them closely after the gulls flew off. I had not seen these before, or since, even though everything I've read says they are common on flotsam. The gulls had a feast that day. --- Thanks for adding me to your watch list. I'm about to go and look at your site. 3-29-2019
