I always feel a bit sorry for wild creatures. I wonder how deeply they can ever go to sleep? Seems they must always be aware of what is going on around them. Great capture and I hope he was able to go back to sleep! . . .vf
Robert C Paulson Jr replied:
Karen -- You are correct that wildlife must always be alert to danger. In the case of this coyote there are wolves around (rarely), but he and a couple coyote buddies of his and I spent about two weeks eyeballing each other off and on near Jasper, Canada. S/he came to trust me pretty well, and I stayed outside his comfort zone (600 mm lens). Fascinating to study how they interact with each other, ravens, and me. I don't think I ever saw him lie down for more than 10-15 minutes, then he would sit up and/or walk off for a few minutes and come back to lie down again. He did the same when I was 200 yards away, too. They are rarely still for long (at least in the daylight, and here in the open. But then, he made no attempt to hide. ---- I felt very honored to have his acceptance and trust -- A much appreciated privilege for me. Unfortunately, he never was interested in seeing any of the cool shots I was able to get. I think he would have liked them and liked to see how handsome he was in his fluffy winter coat. :-) ---- Many photos were taken at about -22°F. I hope we meet again.
Robert C Paulson Jr
We meet again. Thanks for your interest. These guys fascinate me, especially when they are in full winter coat.
