IMAGE: 38,618.01057 -- Experienced huge old elk bull (Cervus canadensis) in rut posture ready & willing to fight to protect his herd from adult male intruders, and to keep his harem in tow. When you see a bull elk with his neck stretched out, his head high and flat, and his nose pulled back and wrinkled, you know that you better be weary. He might just as soon attack you as another bull. Some Native Americans called them Wapiti (which, I’m told, is Shawnee for “white rump”). North America’s elk are similar to Europe’s stag (red deer, Cervus elaphus), and Europeans tend to call N. Am. elk "moose," but our moose are different (Alces alces).
