Description
I rarely photograph nonnative plants, but I made an exception for this stunningly beautiful single red to crimson flower of the lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus radicans, family Gesneriaceae). In the United States this is a horticultural plant, usually grown indoors. The plant itself is vine-like and native to the Malayan Peninsula south to Java, since it requires a humid tropical environment. Here the brilliant red tube shaped flower with waxy green leaves, is seen against a jet black background. The flower is roughly 5-6 cm (2-2.4”) long, including the purple calyx that surrounds its ovary. -- PHOTO: 40,549.02241
