Description
PHOTO: 41,753.05700 -- Close up of a cluster of dozens of Gooseneck Barnacles (Goose Barnacles,Goose Neck Barnacles) (Lepas anatifera, Crustacea; shell portion about 1.5 inches long, and the worm-like neck stretching up to at least 8 inches) (also called goose barnacles) attached to driftwood flotsam on a Pacific Ocean beach in Oregon, USA. Because of their desire to attach to flotsam, Gooseneck Barnacles can be found on beaches and in the oceans throughout much of the world. --- Look in my BIRDS collection and see photos of Western gulls (Larus occidentalis) eating from this mass of barnacles. SEARCH: Western gulls barnacles.

Robert, the barnacle shells are so pretty -- wonderful photo! And what interesting information! So they find some nutrition in the wood or in something else that's attached to the wood? l/f
